It was brutal day to say the least. Decker usually has weird weather and today was no different. I was cold and drizzly throughout the whole race...very miserable conditions. I met Rachel for a two mile warm up and then changed into shorts and put on my bib to get ready for the race. People came out of the Expo center building with about 5 minutes until the race started...smart!

As for the race, I found out I am in terrible shape and ran my slowest ever half marathon by 2 minutes. I started out OK, but had to stop to pee and things got worse after that. My stomach acted up so I slowed to the 9:00 range during miles 9 and 10. I finally pulled over and spent about 5 minutes in the can...not cool since that was the difference in my personal worst half marathon. Since I was a bit lighter I finished with some miles in the 8:30 range. My limited running over the past 4 weeks caught up with me. I am not sure what my next move is as far as this season goes. I don't think I can effectively run the marathon since it is only two months away. I may switch to the Half Distance Challenge and focus on a fast time at 3M. My foot held up really well...probably because my feet were cold and wet which may have numbed it. Anyway, I survived and got another half marathon on my running resume.

Fartleks on the Trail

Today I rolled out of my warm bed for some early fartleks with the group on the trail. I was happy with the effort and am good to go for Decker on Sunday. I am excited because I haven't run the full race since 2006 due to running the Dallas marathon.

Blog Catchup

I have some catching up to do after spending a few days in Dallas last week for the holiday.

Friday - 11/27
I have been resting my broken toe since Monday so today I hit the gym for 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer and some weight lifting. I ate and drank too much in Dallas so the 30 minutes was kind of rough, but enough since I have a long run tomorrow.

Saturday - 11/28
The group ran the Grove loop today. My foot felt a lot better after the rest and the soft trail was really good for me. I cut off at the Pfluger bridge with Anne to get to a bit over 10 miles. I felt good, but was a bit fatigued.

Monday - 11/30
I planned to run on the treadmill today, but my trial Mizunos felt weird on my toe after about .25 miles so I switched to the elliptical trainer. I rode for an hour and felt good, but tired. I did some arm weights and called it a day.

Tuesday - 12/1
I can't believe it is already December...about 2.5 months before the Austin marathon and I am nowhere near where I would like to be. I am hoping to just get through the Decker half marathon this Sunday in one piece. For today I met Wish for a run through the Circle C golf course. It was nice and soft on the grass and dirt, but way muddy. We had to stop and clean our shoes off a couple of times. I ran almost 6 miles and felt pretty good. The toe is healing, but still feels weird and a little numb on one side. Hopefully that goes away soon.

Easy Run on the Trail

This morning I met Anne for an easy 7 on the trail. I have to say the last day has sucked as far as the "toe." Running 13.5 on Saturday really messed me up. I have a huge blister on the "toe" foot and my other leg has some pains in weird places. I think it is all from my new gait which favors my left foot. I did OK today, but decided that I am going to take the rest of the week off and hope to run long on Saturday. I should have done this last week, but you know how us runners are...never want to stop. I am hoping I can still run Decker on 12/6 even if I have to run/walk just so I can stay in the Distance Challenge. The marathon is still TBD, but I know I won't be able to run it as strong as I would like if I still do it.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving!

Trip to Mt. I felt good for the first couple of miles on the trail, but my toe pain caused me to shift my gait a bit. I started to feel it through the scenic portion of the run and my running mates went ahead of me. I made it to the top of Mt. Bonnell, but the way down really hurt. The pressure of my foot sliding forward and against the shoe really sucked. I had to stop a few times on the way back to stretch my left leg and rotate my ankle. I developed a big blister on my big toe on the same foot as the broken toe. It shows how much I was favoring it. I ran really slow the last 5 miles and finished up on the north side of the trail so I could cut a little mileage. It was a really long day, but I got the miles in. Hopefully I didn't damage the toe more. I may take it really easy this week and see if that helps. I just need to keep my long runs going if I have any hope of running the marathon in February.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://frvrunning.blogspot.com/2009/11/trip-to-mt-bonnell.html' title='Trip to Mt. It has become one of the my favorite races of the year and very popular here in Austin. The beneficiary is a great cause and it is great to see Gilbert be very successful with this race.

We started the morning with a 6 mile out and back on the trail. The trail was barren and kind of spooky with the fog. It was a kind of warm, humid morning which sucks for racing. We took about 55 minutes and were back in time to change, hit the potties, and take in some nutrition and fluids. The 10 mile race went OK for me. I was starting to feel tired by mile 4 and we still had some hills left. I just kept pacing and got through it. Once we got out of the hills and onto Lake Austin Boulevard I picked it up a bit. I actually ran the first and last mile at the same pace, 7:47. Everyone seemed to have a good day which was great. I definitely have some work ahead of me if I have any chance of running an 8:00 pace for the marathon in February.

Easy Pre Race Run at Home

Today I ran easy for 4 miles just to warm up so I could stretch when I got home. I felt good until I took a tumble under I-35. RunFar was hosting a 5k for some convention on the trail. It was still dark and I moved over for their runners. Unfortunately for me it was under the bridge where the curb was and I clipped it. As I was getting it together Brian warned another lady, but it was too late and she tumbled as well. That area is unsafe and someone needs to paint the curb a bright, reflective cover so we don't hit it.

8+ Miles from Home

Today I met Wish for the 8+ mile route we did in the spring. Week One of Austin Marathon Training

After a multiple month hiatus from blogging, I am going to track my progress as I participate in the 09/10 Distance Challenge. I know I hate the Austin Marathon, but after missing the fall marathons this year, I just want to run one that is close to home where my family can come watch. My posts will be very short with workouts and times.

The first official race was this past Sunday, the IBM 10k. I ran a 47:04 which isn't bad since I have been sick for about 3 weeks and my training has been spotty.

This morning's workout was the dreaded 4 mile tempo run in the dark. I ran a 31:29 which was a personal worst, but gives me a starting point for this season.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://frvrunning.blogspot.com/2009/10/im-back-week-one-of-austin-marathon.html' title='I'm Back! Since school is out, we were able to do a loop around Kiker without much traffic and then hit the park for another loop. I am feeling weird and slow at the beginning of the run and then once I get warmed up I really feel like I could run a lot longer than the 6 miles I ran today. I guess it is a function of water availability because it is just too hot to go more than 5 or 6 miles without water. I am hoping this bodes well for the longer runs beyond 14 miles this summer and for the marathon in October.

Stats - 6.05 miles/53:04/8:46 pace

Lunch with Teacher

Today I had the opportunity to have lunch with one of my two favorite teachers from my second high school, Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Arizona. It turns out I was in one of Mrs. Cota's first full time teaching classes 28 years ago...yes I am that old! She retired in May and is out here visiting her son and grandson...two very cool dudes and another area where she did great!

I was in her American history class and she was one of those rare teachers that went way above and beyond the call. She made class fun by adding many outside things to class. It wasn't go read the book and take a test. She made it fun and it took time and effort to make it happen for us. Now that I am a parent, I really appreciate all of her efforts when I probably didn't so much back then. My 90 minutes with her today brought back some very good memories.

Thank you Mrs. Cota for all you did for all the students that passed through your doors at Deer Valley High School!

Monday Gazelle Torture Session

Today was my last Monday torture session as we head into the meat of fall marathon season. I wanted to get up early and workout with the group so I could catch the end of the US Open. I was talking to G so I had to run over to AHS by myself. I went the long way, did a couple of sets of circuit and did most of the core workout. Some of that stuff just plain hurts my back. We finished with some jumping and fast feet. I know I complain about torture Mondays, but it was fun!

Stats - 5.76 miles

First Visit to "Mountain Bonnell" this Season

Today we made our first visit to Mt. Bonnell of the fall season. I haven't slept too well the last two nights so I didn't know what to expect today. I think I am used to the heat now, but lack of sleep just plain sucks. I started out with my group and we started out slower than we have been going. I tried to push the pace a little, but wasn't feeling up to it. We were able to get by "Wicki" on Pecos and head on up to Mt. Bonnell. I went up pretty slow and it was the slowest mile of the 14 at 9:32. I got water at the top and headed down. I left my mates and was on my own most of the rest of the run. I ran with Paul (bearded guy) and Mike Andrus for a bit and chased Alex for the last few miles. Although my pace was below my goal of 8:30 for long runs this summer, I ran a nice negative split and ran my fastest miles at the end. Miles 11 - 14 were 8:25, 8:08, 8:20, and 8:13 for the last .93 miles.

I had to run off to get to the girl's swim meet so I skipped the strides and stretching. I parked at AHS so I could make a quick escape afterward. I did about a 2.5 mile warm up with Anne toward Runtex until we hit the group coming our way. We did our drills and it was time to run. The goal was 16 at 10k pace. I started with the fast group, but they rolled out at a lot faster. I stuck to my 10k pace which is around 7:00 per mile and translates to around a 1:45 for a 400. I stayed with my steady pace throughout the workout and felt like I could do more so I was successful. I averaged 1:44 for all 16 with a slow one of 1:45 and a fast one of 1:34. I did a 1.5 mile cool down with Brian and called it a day.

Stats - 9.01 miles

Loops in Circle C

Today I did a couple of different loops in Circle C with the goal of hitting around 6 miles. I slept in a little which really helped after Thursday's run. It was another muggy morning in Austin. Today's route was Grove which is not my favorite, but not bad since I am still not 100%. I started out with Anne and she dropped off on Riverside before we got to Grove. I thought I someone would catch me at the first water stop and then again after I had to stop for a pee break, but no one came up on me. I was passed by some faster groups and could see a group ahead of me. I stopped for water at the power plant and ate my one Accel Gel. I took off again on my own and had to stop before the HS for a carb adjustment...still on one came up on me. I kept going and finally started to feel the heat the last couple of miles. I was able to carry a nice pace throughout the whole run and even had a sub 8:00 mile in the middle of the run. When I got back I found out that some folks cut across on the Pfluger bridge due to the heat. Anne and Rachel finished a bit after me, but did the whole run which was great. I did a couple of strides and called it a day. Another solid long run. I hope I can keep my goal of sub 8:30 long runs even when we get up to 22 miles.

I was able to finally meet little John Wilson when Brian brought him by in the stroller...a very cute and cool kid!

Stats - 13.36 miles/1:51:05/8:18 pace

Run in SW Austin

Today I met Wish for the usual 8 miler out of Circle C and around the neighborhood that borders to the north. I am feeling better, but am still coughing up stuff. The weather was the worst it has been all summer this morning. I think it was in the high 70s with major humidity. I was having enough issues with my breathing and the think air didn't help at all.

The workout was another weird distance to work on form before we get serious in July. The goal was 6x700 at about 70%. I started out with the lead group, but soon dropped back with Rachel. I just didn't have the wind and my legs were really sore from some soccer drills I did with Caroline yesterday. Note to self: NO more lateral workouts like I did when I was on the basketball and tennis teams in high school. My body is primed to only go forward! Back to the workout, the main group went out way too fast and that was the fastest of the 6. We settled into a nice rhythm for the next 4 and did the last one a little quicker. It was one of those days where you just want to get done in one piece. I ran back with Rachel and Brad and stopped at the gym for weights, stretching and abs on the way home.

Splits -3:05, 3:16, 3:16, 3:18, 3:16, 3:10 - 3:14 average

Stats - 6.73 miles

Run Through Circle C

Since school is out we took a different route for today's run. I swear we are becoming Arizona with a bit more humidity.

Stats - 6.5 miles/56:43/8:43 pace

Back to Running

After resting on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I hit the gym for a 50 minute run. I have had a sinus infection or something for almost the past week. I missed my Gazelle workout last Wednesday and my long run on Saturday. I am feelng better, but my equilibrium is a bit off and I still have some congestion. I opted for sleep this AM and hit the gym for the run and did my leg weights. I was pretty much wiped out after that and called it a day. I did some ab work at home and some stretching. Hopefully the worst is behind me. My cold is still hanging in strong, but I felt like running. I ran my normal 8 miler and spent the first half emptying out my head. I usually have this crap in January so I am not happy at all! The nice part of the run today was that is was abnormally cool this AM. I also crossed over 13,000 miles today. I have tracked every mile I have run since 6/1/01 so hitting 13,000 is pretty cool. It is all part of the process and excitement of marathon training. It is going to be a long hard summer, but I am sure the journey will be fun.

One other note. My goal of losing 18 pounds and getting to 190 by 6/1...didn't happen. Although I worked hard at the gym and averaged about 40 miles a week March - May, I over indulged in the beverages and food. No biggie. I started my path to healthiness and marathons on 6/1/2001. It has changed my life forever. I have run 14 marathons and finished 13 of them. I have also run numerous half marathons, 10ks, 8ks, 5ks, and even some mile races. I have run 12,983 miles since 6/1/01 which is pretty amazing since I was was way overweight and totally out of shape back then. I have met many people and made great friends along this journey. Thank you all!

Portland Marathon training kickoff
Today is the official first day of training for my 15th marathon. I plan to run the Portland Marathon on 10/4 in Portland, Oregon. I ran my first marathon there 7 years ago. It will be nice to qualify for Boston where I ran my first race. We did a circuit workout today and I felt good. I ran the long warmup and cool down for some good mileage along with some good strength exercises.

Stats - 6.58 miles

May Summary

I returned to the Gazelles this month and made it to 3 of the 4 Gilbert Monday torture sessions. I ran each mile faster except for one and felt good.
Stats - 6.36 miles/52:24/8:14 pace

Saturday, April 11 - Long Run
Today we did a combo route of the 7 mile loop on the trail and the lollipop loop to finish. We ran at a faster pace again and it felt great. I ran the last 3 miles in 7:56, 8:03, 7:51.
Stats - 11.82 miles/1:38:21/8:19 pace

3/30 - 4/4 Workout Summary

Monday, March 30 - Cross Train/Weights
Since it was the day after the race I hit the elliptical trainer for 45 minutes and lifted weights. I wanted to start testing my theory of running long runs closer to my 8:00 MGP pace and did it during today's run. We tend to start out really slow and then finish fast, but the marathon is about even splits and negative splits are really difficult...especially large ones. The first mile was at almost 10:00 so I pushed it after that. By mile 4 I was in the low 8:40 range and still ended up running the last 3 miles in 8:15, 8:06, 7:52. It wasn't a PR day, but I had a race plan and ran it perfectly. I am still trying to master the art of running a 10k. It is a weird distance since you don't really need to pace for distance like a half or marathon and you can't go all out like in a 5k. The Statesman course is also very hilly up front so you have to get through the hills in good shape before dropping the bomb on the last 3 miles of the course. The weather was perfect for a 10k. It would have been a warm marathon day, but it was cool and clear with very little wind.

Brian and I ran the entire race together. We both had our good and bad spots, but only finished a second apart. Have a racing partner really helped me during the rough patches. The goal for the first 3 miles was to be in the 7:15 range. We went 7:15, 7:12, 7:21...right on target. The goal for the last 3 miles was to run around 7:00 pace. We dropped the pace for that segment to ran 6:58, 6:55, 6:59, and covered the last .2 at 6:17 pace. The training I have been doing on my own has paid off and has given me a nice mental break from getting up at 5:00AM every day.

Race Stats - 10k/44:21/7:09 pace
Overall Finish 438/6649
Age 40-44 Finish 52/429

Easy Run in West Austin

Today I did my pre-race run in west Austin. As I mentioned in my post yesterday it is spring in Austin and that means snakes coming out. Our neighbor had a huge rat snake in their backyard...not cool. Hopefully they stay away from my yard!

I have been a huge ER fan since the show started in 1994. This season has been great with all of the old characters coming back for cameo appearances. You watch a show for that long and think about what has transpired in your own life during the same amount of time...good times!

More TV...for those of you that don't watch Friday Night Lights you are missing out. This is a great show filmed right here in Austin. This is in its third season and the best on so far.

Movies...I read that Zac Effron pulled out of the Footloose remake. I hope the whole film goes away. That movie is a classic and is one of my favorite genre flicks. You just don't remake a good flick like that. Willie Wonka was a classic from when I was a kid and the Johnny Depp version was just plain scary.

Political comment of the week: Republicans need to start coming up with some new ideas to help out our country other than hoping that President Obama and his policies fail. What a crappy strategy. You don't have anything of your own to share so you sit on the sidelines and bitch. Too bad all these politicians don't work for real companies where an attitude like that will get your butt thrown to the curb.

Long Fartleks at Arbor Trail

Today I did fartleks at Arbor Trail. We started out really slow with a 10:30 first mile and I decided to pick it up. One of my new goals for marathon training is to run my long runs within 30 seconds of my MGP. I don't think I stress myself enough during my long runs and just die on race day. Once I picked it up, it was me, Brian, and Marcy. Marcy dropped off at the first water stop and Brian and I finished by ourselves. It was a really solid run through some hilly areas of Austin and I felt stronger than I have in a long time. This place is so convenient. I can get in my workout and then go lift afterward right across the street. The trail is also a lot less abuse on my body which is nice. I did about a mile and a half warm up and then did 5x800 with a goal of 2:00 in between. I was faster with each repeat which was nice. They started their run while I was still in college at Arizona. I know a lot of people are complaining that they got in, but they have an awesome resume and have an awesome story since they are on their 3rd coach in 3 years.

Congratulations to my daughter Emma who was accepted into one of the local Austin magnet schools for next year.

I don't understand why some Governors who are interested in the Presidency in 2012 are using stimulus money as a political weapon. Their states need the money and it is ridiculous. Texas' Governor Perry is one of those guys. I have met the man a few times and like that he is one us runners here in Austin, but shunning money that can assist people out of work in Texas is just plain dumb.

I can't believe it is already spring break. It seems like we were just celebrating Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, NCAA Tournament time is my second "most wonderful time of the year." I am glued to the TV all 4 weekends.

I went to see the movie Watchmen last weekend. What a piece of crap. I slept through half of it and after leaving was asking what did I miss. Since the Witch Mountain movie was number one this past weekend I guess other people agree with me.

I am loving the NetFlix service. The movies get here quickly and you don't have to deal with the tools at the video stores. We just watched Recount with Kevin Spacey. What a really good movie. It is about how George Bush and his cronies stole the 2000 election in Florida. I wonder how different things would be now if Gore had actually been sworn in as President after he won the election.

One last political statement...Dick Cheney, go back to Wyoming and die. You are a tool and no one gives a crap what you think. You are a sicko!

Have a great week!

1000s at Arbor Trail

Today I ran at Arbor Trail again and did 4x1000s. I did a one lap warm up and then started my 1000s with a two minute rest in between. It was kind of cool to just keep looping this trail as I did them instead of walking around for two minutes like we do on the track or at Zilker. My splits were 4:22, 4:29, 4:25, 4:19. My second repeat was a little long. I didn't set the auto lap for .62 so I had to eyeball my watch. I did about a 10 minute cool down and then headed into the gym to lift weights. I also stretched and did some ab/back work. I am feeling really good!

Stats - 5.75 miles

Catch Up - Week of 3/9 - 3/14

3/9 - Mile Repeats at Arbor Trail
Today I did mile repeats at the little trail that runs around Costco and Chuy's in SW Austin. The trail is about 1.4 miles and is really convenient since it is across the street from 24 Hour Fitness. I warmed up for about 15 minutes and then set out. I did 4x1 Mile with 2 minutes rest in between. My splits were 7:35, 7:32, 7:28, 7:18. I did a mile cool down and headed to the gym to lift; both arms and legs.
Stats - 6.7 miles

3/10 - Wish Workout in Circle C
I am going to start calling this the Wish workout since I try and run it with Wish until he drops me. We start out by running about 6 miles easy. We follow that with a mile at moderate pace, with a little jog in between. Then we take off for the remainder of the run at a fast pace; about 2.5 - 3 miles with a little cool down at the end. I did the moderate part OK, but died on the fast pace piece. I lost Wish and took a shorter route home. My fast miles were in the 7:40 range, so not so fast. I did about a half mile cool down. This is definitely something I can improve on.
Stats - 9.45 miles/1:22:24/8:43 overall pace

3/11 - Treadmill Run
The cold front and rain moved in this AM, so I ran on the treadmill. I did 4x4 minute fartleks during a 50 minute run. I varied the speed in the 7:00 range so it was a good workout. I followed that by weights and abs.
Stats - 6.15 miles/50:00/8:08 pace

3/12 - Easy Run in SW Austin
I ran my usual 8+ mile route in SW Austin with Wish. It was raining and cold and I was soaked to the bone. I haven't been this wet or cold in a long time. This drought Austin is in has us spoiled. I got home and hopped directly into the shower to get warm. I was glad I went out and ran today...mental toughness.
Stats - 8.5 miles/1:14:54/8:48 pace

3/13 - Crosstraining and Weights
Today I hit the gym for 45 minutes on the elliptical and weights. I am really enjoying this crosstraining day instead of taking a day off. I think it will help me lose weight and make me stronger since I will be running my long Saturday runs a little more tired.

3/14 - Long Run
I met Marcy, Brian, and Anne for a Scenic tour. It's been a long time since did this run and it was nice to do it with friends. We did the usual scenic route and then came back via Pecos. It was still cold outside, but nice weather for a run. This is probably our last really cold morning until next winter. We did a couple of strides and then I headed home.
Stats - 11.34 miles/1:38:57/8:41 pace

Long Running...and Falling

Today I met my gal pals for a new run. The route was a 12 miler that was a counter-clockwise version of the Austin Marathon. After the marathon I was thinking that running this direction may be easier, but I was wrong. We were climbing pretty steadily until we turned off the course at 38th street. We were able to enjoy the rolling hills of Exposition which is my least favorite running stretch in Austin. Along Lake Austin boulevard I took another tumble. A guy was running with his dog on a leash that was extended too long. When I was trying to figure out how not to get tripped by the damn dog, I caught a raised sidewalk lip and went down hard. The only good thing was that I only ripped open my perpetual "falling" scar. I got more bruised up this time, but all in all I don't feel too bad. I really have to focus on picking up my feet. I cleaned up a little bit at the rock and then finished up on the trail. I struggled a bit, but it was my longest run since the marathon and it was warm and humid. This will allow me to stay committed to my gym time and all me to workout on my usual Friday rest day without running. I plan to hit the Gazelle workouts on M/W and then hit the gym on the way home to lift. T/Th will be recovery runs in the neighborhood and Friday will be elliptical/weights days. I think the extra workout day will help me with my weight loss goals as well.

For today I rode the elliptical trainer for 45 minutes and then an upper body workout. My legs were not moving at all when I left the house was a bad sign for the run. I felt better once we started, but about halfway through the run I was pooped. I think it could be the speed work I did yesterday. It was also windy as hell (getting really old). I did a 1.5 mile warm up out to Escarpment and Slaughter and on my way marked out a .25 mile stretch of road. G's workout said to do sets of 5 with time in between. I opted for 10 in a row with a minute rest in between. I started out and didn't do so well. It has been a long time since I did speed work. The first 5 were in the low 1:40s and the last 5 were in the 1:30s for an average of 1:39. The times weren't the best, but at least I know where I am at the start of the spring season. It sounds old, but I feel great. My Mom and Dad are in town and we have had a really great time so far. Last night was a meat fest at The Salt Lick. I ate way too much and didn't sleep too well. Carla helped me sleep in this AM so I headed out for my birthday run at around 8:30. It was a beautiful morning and I just wanted to run. I headed north on Escarpment out of the neighborhood and just kept going. I ended up doing my 8 mile route and felt great. It is the longest I have run since the marathon and I was really enjoying it. I didn't feel too tired until the end and that was probably due to my diet over the past couple of days.

I took the day off from work and I had a great birthday thanks to my wonderful family!

Stats - 8.12 miles/1:10:13/8:39 pace

Saturday Treadmill Run

It is a soccer tournament weekend for Caroline so I had to find an early time to run. My initial plan was to run with the group, but a front came through and all I could hear was the wind all night. The last place I wanted to run was in the wind so I opted for the gym and the treadmill. I got a little extra sleep and had exactly one hour at the gym. I jumped on the treadmill and suffered through 7.1 miles. I encountered some dumb ass dogs off their leash, but didn't went past them without any incident. I picked it up on the way back so I could get under 9:00 pace. I had a hard time sleeping because my legs were throbbing so bad. The course tore up my quads really bad and I could definitely feel them last night. My legs felt better once I warmed up, but stiffened quickly when I got home.

Tuesday -
I woke up today and felt like hitting the gym. I rode the recumbent bike for 10 minutes and then rode the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes. I also lifted upper body weights. The course is hard and it feels like you are climbing no matter where you are. My training and diet from Dallas in December to now hasn't been the best and for the marathon you get out what you put in so my 3:58:21 time was about right.

I met Brian and Carrie at the Runtex annex around 5:45 in the morning. We hung out and got ready to run. We headed over to the start line around 6:30 and it wasn't too crowded around the 3:30 pace group. My garbage bag/Gatorade bottle bathroom worked like a charm. Especially since the race started 15 minutes late.

Brian and I stuck to our race plan for the first part of the race which meant going slower than 8:00 pace up the hills and faster down the hills. We were ahead of plan for the first 7-8 miles and then started to get to where we were on plan. I was getting tired going up Exposition and Brian didn't look so hot either. Carrie left us in the dust going up Exposition and Brian dropped off I think somewhere near Bull Creek/Shoal Creek. I was having a hard time breathing which is probably some lingering effects of the cold I had in the past couple of weeks. I don't think I have ever wheezed during a marathon, but it happened today. Once I slowed a bit it went away. I saw Carla and Emma near Northcross Mall and gave them my gloves and pace band. I knew there was no way I was going to get to 3:30 at that point and just wanted to finish without walking. I also wanted to finish under 4 hours after the debacle in Dallas.

I think at that point in the race I was about 5 minutes off pace and fading. Rachel jumped in with me at mile 19 and was a life saver. She just kept talking to me about this and that so I wouldn't think about anything else. I think we walked 2 times for a minute and then I walked half way up the hill at Dean Keaton. What a shitty place for a hill...right at mile 24. Once Rachel turned back I had about 1.2 miles to go and trudged on. Emma ran me up the hill on San Jacinto which really helped a lot. Once got to the top on San Jac I ran faster through the finish which was just across from the Capitol (see picture above).

My time wasn't what I wanted, but I finished my 13th marathon out of 14 starts and feel good about it. Average training gets you average finishes so this is fine. I know what I need to do better next time. Weight training, core work, diet, and I need to lose about 15 pounds from my race weight today. I am planning to make my next BQ attempt at the Portland Marathon on October 4th. It's where I ran my first marathon and it would be sweet to come full circle with my BQ time there.

I want to thank Carla, Emma, and Caroline for encouraging me to run this race after I got back from Dallas in December. Your support is awesome and I love you all! I also want to thank Brian and Rachel for all their support this extra long marathon season. You all are great friends!

Stats - 26.2 miles/3:58:21/9:06 pace

Easy 30 Minutes on the Trail

This morning I joined the group for an easy 30 minute run on the trail. All that is left is an easy 30 minute run on Saturday morning. I got home late from the UT basketball game so I did my workout at home. I ran about 1.5 miles and then did 1 minute on/1 minute off fartleks for 10 sets. I finished with a 1.5 mile cool down run. Everything felt great and I am feeling good mentally as well. I decided this week was going to look like 2006 when I only ran on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday prior to the race. In 2006 I rested completely on Tues/Thurs/Friday. I decided to do something to today so I hit the elliptical trainer for 35 minutes just to work up a sweat. I stretched at home and did some easy ab and back work to keep things loose.

I am feeling positive and have been doing some visualization since I know the course like the back of my hand. It's scary that I know it so well especially since I hate the course so much. It didn't really hit me until this AM and that is a good thing. I usually have all this build up and pressure leading up to a marathon. This time it is a lot different since I am running in my hometown. There are many pluses including sleeping in my own bed, I get to cook my own food, and I can sit on my ass in my own house on Saturday instead of on top of a hotel bed. This race is really an after thought and I am totally calm. I am just going to run and see what the day holds. Of course I will have a special time in the back of my mind, but it is just another race in Austin.

As for today, I didn't sleep last night so I did not meet the Gazelles for 1000s at the track. I opted for running just over 3k at MGP. I warmed up for about 15 minutes and then did an out and back on Escarpment. The first mile was downhill and the second mile was uphill. Kind of a nice prep for the Austin course. After I finished the MGP section I cooled down back to the house. It was warm and humid so I felt OK. The weather is looking good for Sunday. Hopefully the forecast holds.

Stats - 5.31 miles
3K MGP - 2 miles/15:59/8:00 pace

Nice 10 Miler

Today we ran 10 miles on the LBL trail. The goal was 6 at an easy pace with the last 4 at MGP. Since I have been sick all week I didn't know what to expect. I hit my inhaler before I left to open up the pipes a bit. I hate doing using the albuterol because it increases my heart rate. Rachel, Brian, and I started in the pack, but by the north side separated from the masses. We started the pace part a bit past I-35 and I actually felt good and wasn't breathing as hard as I was on Wednesday. My cardio felt a lot better and I wasn't coughing up as much stuff as earlier in the week. Rachel dropped off the pace and Brian and I finished strong. We did a few strides and then joined the group for stretching.

After today's workout I am actually getting excited about the marathon next week. I ran for 45 minutes and then did some stretching and some ab work.

Stats - 5.33 miles/46:00/8:38 pace

Week of 1/26 - 1/31/09 Summary

I am not doing a good job of logging my workouts lately so I here is another recap of the week.

1/26 - Short jog with Carla
We intended to do a 3 mile loop after the race yesterday, but once we started we didn't feel like running and did some run/walk until we got home.
Stats - 1.84 miles

1/27 - I ran with Wish through the neighborhood. We did a loop of the golf course and then did some loops in the west side of Circle C. It was a slow run, but good since my legs are still tired from the half marathon.
Stats - 6.2 miles/57:53/9:20 pace

1/28 - It was cold as hell today with ice. I skipped the Gazelle workout and when I went to run at home I turned back at the end of the cul-de-sac...too damn cold!

1/29 - Another very cold morning with 28 degrees when I went outside. I met Wish for the usual Thursday 8 mile loop. It wasn't too bad once we warmed up, but my hands and ears were really cold.
Stats - 8.2 miles/1:12:43/8:51 pace

1/30 - I ran a couple of loops in the neighborhood out to the HEB and back, and then around Caroline's school for just under 6 miles. I feel another cold coming on due to the cedar pollen...sucks!
Stats - 5.81 miles/51:30/8:52 pace

1/31 - We ran the southern part of the Austin Marathon course today. I ran with Rachel, Anne, and Marcy for most of the way. I didn't feel too good and was just happy to get the miles in. We ran the last couple of miles pretty fast which was good. Running this part of the course sucks as a training run because you have to spend a lot of time of the sidewalk. That takes a lot of concentration and tires you more. Hopefully running on the street on race day will be better.
Stats - 13.94 miles/2:01:28/8:42 pace

2009 3M Half Marathon

Today was the annual 3M Half Marathon. As usual, it was an awesome day for racing. It was in the high 30s at the start and cloudy. We hit some light southerly winds at near the end, but nothing to make a difference. We did a two mile warm up and then changed in our running gear. I decided on one long sleeve layer on top with compression shorts and running shorts on the bottom, gloves, and a running hat. Our goal for the day was to start off slow and then run an overall 7:50 pace. Brian and I have the marathon in 3 weeks so going to hard here could totally mess that up. The first half of the race was right on target with some faster miles during the 300 foot drop between miles three through 6.

Splits - 8:35, 8:11, 7:52, 7:46, 7:42, 7:46

Once we got past the transition point for the relay we hit another downhill section on Burnet to North Loop where we encountered our first hills. It wasn't bad at all although I know I was working a bit harder during miles 7-9. We picked it up for the last 4 miles and cruised down Duval, through the campus and into the finish line. We caught Anne right before the finish and she joined us for our four-person, (Anne, Brian, Rachel, me), finish line photo.

Splits - 7:56, 7:59, 7:53, 7:49, 7:40, 7:26, 7:25

Carla ran the first leg of the relay and found us at the bag pick up right after we finished. She had an awesome day too and I am really proud of her. It was a very good day. I did exactly what I wanted to do and am on track for a solid marathon in 3 weeks.

Race Stats - 1:43:02/7:52 pace
Overall - 719/4140

Week of 1/19 - 1/24 Summary

1/19 - Mile Repeats at Zilker
We did mile repeats today at Zilker. I was not wanting to do this since I pulled my calf here during the summer. I was very glad I came. I had a great workout. I started out slow as usual, but once I warmed up I had some good times.
Repeats - 7:20, 7:09, 6:56, 6:56, 6:51 - 7:02 Average

1/20 - Recovery through the Circle C Park
Wish is finally back running so we did an easy run through the park and then around Kiker.
Stats - 6.01 miles/54:39/9:06 pace

1/21 - Fartleks in South Austin
I didn't want to run in the dark on the trail so I did fartleks at home on the road. I had a good time and thought they were a lot more productive for me since I didn't have worry about tripping on anything on the trail. I did 13x1 minute with 1 minute in between each repeat.
Stats - 7 miles/1:00:01/8:34 pace

1/22 - SW Austin Loop
Wish and I got back to our usual Thursday route through SW Austin today.
